Eddie Ávila

Director of Rising Voices

Eddie Ávila is the current director of Rising Voices, volunteer author and also part of Global Voices since 2005.

 

Rising Voices is the outreach initiative of Global Voices to help support and help indigenous demographics participate in the global conversation. They support communities through training, mentoring, network-building, microgrant funding and other resources to help the indigenous communities in telling their own digital stories.

 

He also co-founded Bolivian Voices in 2007 to provide digital media training to indigenous students in the city of El Alto.

Rita Lasimbang

CEO of Kadazandusun Language Foundation (KLF)

Ms. Rita Lasimbang is the Chief Executive Officer of the Kadazandusun Language Foundation (KLF) after serving as a curator at the Department of Sabah Museum.

​

Ms. Lasimbang has a B.Sc (Hons.) in Botany from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, and an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington, USA.

​

She has served as a project coordinator and linguistic consultant in the compilation of the Kadazan Dusun - Malay - English dictionary, the Timugon Murut - Malay dictionary, as well as the Hatod Suang Lotud dictionary.

​

Ms. Lasimbang has long been active in the promotion and preservation of indigenous languages and cultures.  She has conducted training workshops, given talks, and coordinated various publications in this field.

Shawn Isaac Eddie is a pure Kadazan from Sabah. The Kadazan is one of the major native ethnicities in Sabah and usually resides in the west coast area of Sabah. Shawn Isaac Eddie was a student of SM St Michael, Penampang which is one of the top schools in Sabah. He is currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science in UTP under a sponsorship offered by Petronas.

Jordan Maikon Tambaka is a Chemical Engineering student who previously worked as a translator for Komuhakan's English-Kadazan Translation Team. Komuhakan is a youth-led movement in Sabah that aims to empower indigenous communities. Additionally, he was also the Project Director for the VMC Program (1-1 Virtual Mock Job Interview Coaching), where participants underwent a mock interview with an evaluator from their respective industries. The program was designed to help future employees prepare for employment interviews and acquaint them with the process.
